Summer 2006

Hall Reads Together 2006

Look to the North this September when Railroad John and the Red Rock Run by Tony Crunk and Quake by Gail Karwoski will be the chosen titles for this year's Hall Reads Together.  This will be the third "One Book, One Community" project designed to promote the image of Hall County as a literate community.  Two youth-oriented books were chosen, and though brief, will springboard the library into a number of related community events for differing age groups.

During the week of September 18, 2006 presentations and events will include:

Monday, September 18 - Gainesville Branch 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Gail Hogan, Hall County Library System Storyteller, will read Railroad John and the Red Rock Run in costume as Wildcat Annie.

Tuesday, September 19 - Gainesville Branch 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Pat Shields, Georgia Storyteller and Musician, presents "Telling Tall Tales.”

Thursday, September 21 - Northeast Georgia History Center 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Douglas Van Veelan, author of The Gainesville Midland and her Sister Short Lines, will be available for book signing.

Friday, Sept. 22

Tony Crunk, author of Railroad John and the Red Rock Run, and Gail Karwoski, author of Quake, will speak on the creative writing of children's books and young adult historical fiction. The audience will be Hall County middle and high school students and Gainesville State College students on Friday morning, and Gainesville City middle and high school students on Friday afternoon. Gainesville State College will host the morning event, while the afternoon program will take place at Gainesville High School's Warehouse.

Sat., Sept. 23 - Thurmond-McRae Auditorium at Brenau University 11:00 am

Tony Crunk and Michael Austin, author and illustrator of Railroad John and the Red Rock Run, will speak. Discussion topics will include the art of writing and illustrating children's books. Gail Karwoski, author of Quake, will speak about researching and writing a historical novel for young adults. The Georgia Mudcats, a Northeast Georgia musical group, will perform before and after the presentations.

Additional information and updates will be available from the Hall Reads                                 Together website at http://www.hallreadstogether.org/.

Director’s Corner

Dear Friend,

We are a month away from the start of our community's third annual Hall Reads Together event. It is sponsored by several public and private organizations in the county - including the library system and you. Once again the Friends of the Library helped bring this program to the community. This is indicative of what can be done with your support.

Hall Reads Together is a program that encourages reading and writing while enjoying the successful efforts of Georgia artists. The event’s web page is developed by Red Clay Interactive and can be found at www.hallreadstogether.org. This page also includes links to previous year's programs. Red Clay is not the only local business supporting the program. Morton, Vardeman & Carlson is designing the graphics; Gainesville Printing is responsible for the posters, the TIMES is publishing a study guide and distributing copies to the local schools through its Newspapers in Education program; Gainesville State College, Brenau University, Gainesville City Schools and the Hall County School System are providing space and transportation; AG Edwards Trust is providing advertising on five billboards; and the Friends of the Hall County Library System, the Gainesville/Hall Alliance for Literacy, Publix Charities and the Hall Book Exchange are offering financial support.

What is this year's event going to bring to the community? A real festival. A week of fun. An opportunity to listen to children's authors and an illustrator discuss writing. A chance to enjoy folk music, hear about the local Midland train, and learn about storytelling. So follow the web link, visit the library's web page and pay attention to the billboards and newspaper over the next month to learn what is going on this year with Hall Reads Together. Be sure to jot down the dates of the events in your calendar. It is a family festival so bring your spouse, children, nieces and nephews - do not forget your mom and pop - and enjoy what we hope will continue to be an annual event in Hall County.

What are friends? They are the people, businesses and organizations that make your lives nicer. Good neighbors, just like you.

See you at a Hall Reads event this September.

Sincerely,

Adrian Mixson, Library Director
