Farewell to a Friend

Elaine Dittmer has resigned as President of the Friends of the Hall County Library. Elaine is relocating to El Paso, Texas, to spend more time with her family. During her tenure as President of Friends, Elaine has worked hard to revitalize the organization. She was instrumental in securing SPLOST funds for the new South Hall Library. She has helped plan interesting programs and worked to make Friends a well run organization with a budget, goals and a healthy membership roster. While we wish her the best, Elaine will certainly be missed. The El Paso Public Library is lucky to be getting such a wonderful Friend.

Your membership in Friends supports many wonderful library programs and services. During 2005, the Friends contributed to Hall Reads Together featuring author Philip Lee Williams, brought NY Times bestselling author Steve Berry to speak, and contributed substantially to funding the library’s Vacation Reading Program.  Please continue to support the library by participating in Friends.

Don’t forget to renew your Friends of the Hall County Library membership for 2006. Your contribution is tax deductible, and will be used to support the library. Use the form at the end of the newsletter to join or renew your membership.  If your name is not on the list of members, the Friends have not received your 2006 renewal.   Please check the list and let us know if we have your name misspelled or have omitted you from the list by mistake. As always, thank you for being a Friend!

Director’s Corner

Dear Friend,

It is that time of year again. On June 5, the Friends are having their annual get together to elect new officers and organize for another year. Last year they had Georgia author Steve Berry speak at the program, and everyone that attended enjoyed his question/answer period as much as his talk about how he made the New York Times list for bestsellers. Steve has just released a new novel. I understand that The Templar Legacy is the best book he has written so far and it is a natural tie in with our upcoming Friends program.

This year the Friends invited Mary Beth Looney, an assistant professor and Chair of the Art & Design Department at Brenau University, to speak about The Da Vinci Code. This will occur just a few weeks after the movie has been released, so the program will be timely and fun. Those of us who enjoyed the book or movie or are familiar with Da Vinci’s paintings should learn something new. The talk will be held at the Thurmond-McRae Auditorium on the campus of Brenau University.  It is on a Monday night and treats will be served, so there should be no reason to miss it.

I hope to have an opportunity to meet with you at the program. I also want to learn what the Friends are interested in accomplishing next year. There is a new library branch on the horizon with a lot to do before it opens.

Sincerely,

Adrian Mixson, Library Director
