Annual
Friends of the Library Event Announced
Join us for
a
Book Lovers’ Roadshow
Tuesday, November 13,
2007
5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
(drop in)
at the
Gainesville
Library
Are your bookshelves
overflowing? Have you inherited unusual books or found some interesting books at
a yard sale? Whether it's your great grandparents' family Bible or a first
edition of Huckleberry Finn, bring it to the Friends of the Library Book
Lovers’ Roadshow!
The Friends of the
Hall County Library will hold their annual meeting and program on Tuesday,
November 13 at 5:00 p.m. Following
a brief business meeting, antiquarian book dealer Cliff Graubert will give a brief presentation on identifying
valuable books. Following Mr. Graubert’s talk, he will
be available on a first come, first served basis to offer appraisals of books
brought in by program attendees, a sort of “antique road show” for books. (Due to time constraints, no more than
four books per person, please.)
About our
Presenter
Cliff Graubart has
run the Old New York Bookshop since 1971.
He is a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America
(www.abaa.org). For 25 years he ran his store on Juniper Street in Midtown
Atlanta where autograph parties for Pat Conroy, Anne Siddons, Terry Kay and
others were held. In 1996 he went
electronic and now sells rare books from home via the Internet.
The
Director’s Corner
Dear
Friend,
Without the
civic-minded there would be few public libraries. When Benjamin Franklin first
started his Library Company, it was because he wanted what was best for his
community. This idea was quickly picked up by the civic-minded in other
communities in the colonies and to this day the Free Public Library of
Philadelphia credits Franklin’s spirit for its existence. The first lending
library in this country even changed its name from Exeter to the Franklin Public
Library to honor the man that donated its first lending collection. Andrew
Carnegie wanted to return to his new country some of what he gained using a mill
library as a recent immigrant by funding the construction of thousands of what
became known as Carnegie libraries. Thousands of other libraries, including the
Hall County Library System, owe their existence to Women’s Clubs. I have never
worked in a public library that did not derive its roots from the efforts of the
local Women’s Club to provide a facility to help the industrious to improve
their minds and - in the spirit of Franklin and Carnegie -
themselves.
In this day and age,
it is library Friends that are the most influential group in the movement to
improve public library services. Without Friends public libraries would always
be twisting in the wind of what is most politically expedient. Our Friends are
our spokespeople. They can talk to our funders. They can raise money to build
new programs and come to the defense of libraries when they are threatened by
outside groups.
You are important and
I hope you can attend our annual Friends program. I would like to meet and thank
each one for what you do for your library. If it is nothing but becoming a
Friends member, it says you value a free public library in your community and
want your name to be associated with it. This year’s annual program has a twist
and provides you an opportunity to bring a book you value. An appraiser will
help you try to determine its monetary worth, though we know the real value of a
book is found between its boards just like the real treasure in a library is its
Friends group.
I hope you can attend
your annual program and meet your Friends officers in person, and just maybe get
actively involved next year.
