Policy on Service to Schools
Hall County Library System
Library Mission: The Hall County Library System provides its patrons with resources and services to meet their information, educational, business and recreational needs. Special focus is placed on providing and maintaining an adequate reference collection to support current and reliable information for the community and encouraging Hall County residents to develop an interest in reading and lifelong learning. The library system serves as a learning resource center for all library patrons in the community.

Support for Formal Education: Though local schools have libraries for their students, there is still a need for Hall County Library System to play a supporting role for K—12 education. The library offers teachers additional resources for their curricula; provides an after-school, evening, and weekend study environment; and provides access to additional resources, including those available in other libraries, for students doing research for school projects.

Objectives: The library would like to increase use by the educational community of the library’s informational collections and services for students.

Policies and Procedures: Teachers who come into the library and check out materials on their personal cards are subject to the same policies as the general public. Hall County Library System participates in the PINES network of libraries around the state. Any citizen of Georgia can get a PINES library card. Those who use the library’s Teacher Request Service (see form) for books to supplement the educational program are subject to the following policies:

The school must have a library card. (The principal of the school must send a letter on school letterhead requesting a library card for the school.)

Requests for books must go through the school media specialist who will use a Teacher Request form. The media specialist will fax (770-532-4305) or mail the form to the Gainesville Branch of the library or e-mail it to astice@hallcountylibrary.org.

The check-out period is 30 days. Generally, the books may not be renewed. Special needs for renewals will be considered on a case by case basis and must be made through the Youth Services Department (770-532-3311, ext. 129).

The library will provide as many books as possible to support subject requests, without depleting the library’s collection in a subject area. No more than five books will be sent on a particular subject.

Requests may be made for books but not audio-visual materials. Teachers must use their personal library cards to borrow videos/DVDs, audiobooks, or CDs.

We regret that we cannot honor requests for adult, holiday, or other high-demand books. Teachers may check these out on their personal cards.

Schools will be responsible for returning library books on time and will be charged overdue fines for late returns. Also, schools will be charged for lost and damaged books. For your protection, we ask that these items be used only in the classroom. Please do not send them home with students.
